Even though at that time neither of my parents had gone to college, I remember thinking about college at quite an early age. By the time I was in 4th grade or so I even had a school picked out, though of course I didn't end up there. How old were you when you first thought of college as a goal? When was it set in your mind that you would at least try to attend college? Do you have any suggestions on how to choose a school?
By the way, I would really like to encourage everyone to post photos, of themselves, and perhaps of the school you do or did attend. I bet that in most cases there are some good pictures online that could be posted to give my students an idea of what a pleasant place college can be to spend a few years!

College was something I only dreamed about. I was much to cowardly to actually attempt it. Because of shyness and lack of confidence and fear of interacting with strangers, I chose not to try. When I was in my 30's and my children needed me less, it occurred to me that if I could chose to do anything I wanted with my time, I would chose college. So I did. I enjoyed it more than I thought I would and stayed longer than I thought I would, earning three degrees. I strongly believe that a liberal arts education is essential in order to live life fully and to your full potential. Laurie, I forget how you happened to go away for high school. Can you remind me of how that happened? Amanda, Mary, where are you?

ReplyDeleteI always planned on going to college. It never crossed my mind not to. Of course by the time I was in high school Ted had graduated from college my Mom was in the mist of it and it was what all my friends were planning as well. I wanted to be a better musician but I also wanted to live in a dorm with friends and experience life away from home. Not too far away tho', I still needed the security of my family close by.

It's great that both Sue and Ted took college for granted. I would like to feel that I somewhat influenced that. Also we lived in a town of professional people who valued education (we chose the town) and where there was an excellent school system. Also credit due to grandpa and gramma who encouraged us to move to our future hometown.
